25 Chris Stapleton Songs Sure to Bring You to Your Knees

Chris Stapleton has only released four albums, but paring down a list of his 25 best songs is very difficult. These hits and album cuts are sure to make you feel some kind of way.

No. 25:
No. 25: “Millionaire”

Mercury Nashville

No. 25: “Millionaire”

Chris Stapleton recorded this love song for his 2018 album, From A Room: Volume 2. It’s a good song, but the problem with all Chris Stapleton love songs is they’re instantly compared to “Tennessee Whiskey.” That’s not fair.

10.
10. “Drunkard’s Prayer”

UMG Nashville

No. 24: “Drunkard’s Prayer”

Stapleton’s best songs are layered. This one, from 2017’s From A Room: Vol. 2, is ostensibly the story of a man who seems to have lost his faith, instead getting drunk and grappling with the fact that God has let him down — but in the chorus, listeners discover that he’s both turned to alcohol because of a broken heart and is, in fact, pleading with God to send his love back to him.

“I wish that I could go to church, but I’m too ashamed of me / I hate the fact it takes a bottle to get me on my knees,” Stapleton sings, “And I hope he’ll forgive the things you ain’t forgot / When I get drunk and talk to God.”

No. 23:
No. 23: “Broken Halos”

Mercury Nashville

No. 23: “Broken Halos”

This is Chris Stapleton’s first No. 1 radio hit, released in 2017 on the From A Room: Volume 1 album. It’s a song inspired by people who die too young.

9.
9. “Them Stems”

UMG Nashville

No. 22: “Them Stems”

Many of Stapleton’s best songs are deep — but then again, some of them are lighthearted, blues-influenced tracks about running out of weed. From A Room: Vol. 1‘s “Them Stems” is goofy, sure, but it’s also catchy as heck. It’s a testament to Stapleton’s versatility that he can give weight to the lines “I’m in a bad, bad way again / ‘Cause this mornin’, I smoked them stems.”

No. 21:
No. 21: “Arkansas”

Adam Hagy, Getty Images

No. 21: “Arkansas”

There are a few rockers on this list of Chris Stapleton’s top songs, but none rip as hard as “Arkansas.” You long for a road trip when you hear this beater from Starting Over. He snarls on stages when he plays it.

8.
8. “When the Stars Come Out”

UMG Nashville

No. 20: “When the Stars Come Out”

“When the Stars Come Out” is part love song, part a reflection on celebrity. The Traveller track is a prime example of how Morgane Stapleton elevates her husband’s music. Her harmonies throughout this gorgeous track, co-written by Semisonic’s Dan Wilson, are understated — but without them, it simply wouldn’t be the same.

No. 19:
No. 19: “Death Row”

No. 19: “Death Row”

If you love the blues, then you’ll love the guitar and vocals of this dark album-closer. “Death Row” was not made for radio, but it sure strikes a mood when he takes it to the stage.

7.
7. “Was It 26”

UMG Nashville

No. 18: “Was It 26”

Whether or not fans realize it, covers are a big part of Stapleton’s repertoire. By now, everyone knows that David Allan Coe and George Jones sang “Tennessee Whiskey,” Stapleton’s breakout song, before he did, but all three of Stapleton’s albums are dotted with re-imagined tracks. “Was It 26,” penned by Don Sampson, was originally released by the Charlie Daniels Band on their 1989 album Simple Man. Stapleton’s version adds a sharper edge to the tale of a streak of mid-20s hard living.

No. 17:
No. 17: “Devil Always Made Me Think Twice”

No. 17: “Devil Always Made Me Think Twice”

Every list has an author’s choice. This bluesy country-rocker is it for Chris Stapleton’s Best Songs list. It won’t make most Top 10 lists, but his aggression deserves mention.

6.
6. “Scarecrow in the Garden”

UMG Nashville

No. 16: “Scarecrow in the Garden”

“Scarecrow in the Garden” is a slow-burning story song from From A Room: Vol. 2. From the point of view of the youngest child of Irish immigrant farmers, Stapleton details a family’s journey to West Virginia and their years of fruitful harvest; however, he sings, “The fields ain’t what they once were,” and his inherited land has now become a burden.

If you’ve not heard this song before, we won’t ruin its ending. Just know that it’s one of modern country music’s finest stories.

3.
3. “Parachute”

UMG Nashville

No. 15: “Parachute”

The only Stapleton single to grace this Top 25 list (what can we say, we’re fans of the deep cuts!), “Parachute” is one of Stapleton’s most upbeat songs — and certainly his most upbeat love song. A profession of love even in tough times, the song’s sentiment is nothing new, but its central metaphor certainly is.

“Falling feels like flying ’til you hit the ground,” Stapleton sings. “Say the word and I’ll be there for you / Baby, I will be your parachute …”

No. 14:
No. 14: “Sometimes I Cry”

No. 14: “Sometimes I Cry”

Chris Stapleton’s Traveller album ends with this exclamation point. “Sometimes I Cry” is a raw heartbreaker that leaves everything he can do vocally on the floor. If he chooses it for a concert, hold on to your seat.

4.
4. “Second One to Know”

UMG Nashville

No. 13: “Second One to Know”

“Second One to Know” rocks, pure and simple. By the time Stapleton released this track to promote his 2017 album From A Room: Vol. 1, country fans were fully aware of his powerful voice and incredible knack for songwriting. But in this three-minute song, Stapleton unleashes a guitar-fueled fury that’ll have you looking like the shocked-face emoji (especially when it’s live in concert). Is there anything he can’t do? (Answer: Probably not.)

No. 12:
No. 12: “Maggie’s Song”

Mercury Nashville

No. 12: “Maggie’s Song”

We once made a full list of sad Chris Stapleton songs, but “Maggie’s Song” wasn’t around to top it yet. It’s a song about his dog and it ends like you think it’s going to end. Grab a tissue for this one.

No. 11:
No. 11: “Nobody to Blame”

Mercury Nashville

No. 11: “Nobody to Blame”

“Nobody to Blame” is Chris Stapleton’s first Top 10 radio hit. It’s a rocker that plays very well on stages across America. One can’t help but hear Waylon Jennings when Chris sings this song from Traveller

No. 5:
No. 5: “Daddy Doesn’t Pray Anymore”

UMG Nashville

No. 10: “Daddy Doesn’t Pray Anymore”

This song is another one that doesn’t go where you think it’s going. At the start of “Daddy Doesn’t Pray Anymore,” Stapleton makes listeners think that the narrator’s father has turned his back on religion — but really, “Daddy doesn’t pray anymore” because he’s “finally walkin’ with the Lord.” That’s a surprise gut punch if we ever heard one.

1.
1. “Whiskey and You”

UMG Nashville

No. 9: “Whiskey and You”

Stapleton and Lee Thomas Miller co-wrote practically perfect lyrics for this song, but it’s Stapleton’s aching delivery and sparse melody that really sells “Whiskey and You.” Hangovers, Stapleton posits, ain’t got nothin’ on heartaches:

“One’s the devil / One keeps driving me insane … One’s a liar that helps to hide me from my pain / And one’s the long-gone bitter truth,” he sings. “That’s the difference between whiskey and you.”

No. 8:
No. 8: “What Are You Listening To?”

Mercury Nashville

No. 8: “What Are You Listening To?”

Stapleton has begun playing “What Are You Listening To” during live shows again, and that’s a good thing. It’s his first release to country radio and it was widely ignored, despite being the most interesting song of 2013. It’d take two more years before fans would start to find it.

No. 7:
No. 7: “Old Friends”

Rich Fury, Getty Images

No. 7: “Old Friends”

Chris Stapleton brought new life to a great Guy Clark song. “Old Friends” is a special message delivered without obstruction.

No. 6:
No. 6: “Either Way”

Mercury Nashville

No. 6: “Either Way”

Lee Ann Womack first recorded this ballad about a marriage falling apart. It’s a stunning vocal performance on the From A Room: Volume 1 album and one Chris Stapleton’s darkest lyrics.

No. 5:
No. 5: “You Should Probably Leave”

Mercury Nashville

No. 5: “You Should Probably Leave”

What makes Chris Stapleton a truly remarkable artist is he’s dynamic in both his vocal delivery and storytelling. None of his love songs are replicas of one that came previously. They all have the kind of nuance you’d expect from a man who sings with so much of it. “You Should Probably Leave” was an easy No. 1 for Stapleton in 2022.

2.
2. “Fire Away”

UMG Nashville

No. 4: “Fire Away”

Love isn’t always easy; in fact, quite often, it’s tough, whether due to external circumstances or internal turmoil. “Fire Away,” from Stapleton’s debut album, Traveller, is a profession of support even in those hardest of times: “Honey, load up your questions / And pick up your sticks and your stones / And pretend I’m a shelter for heartaches / That don’t have a home / Choose the words that cut like a razor / And all that I’ll say / Is fire away …”

It’s both a heartbreaking and beautiful statement of love.

No 3:
No 3: “Starting Over”

Mercury Nashville

No 3: “Starting Over”

Unintentionally, Chris Stapleton delivered what was needed during the COVID-19 pandemic. With “Starting Over,” he offered hope that transcended the romantic lyrics he penned with Mike Henderson. This all-time great Chris Stapleton song was required medication for the better part of 18 months, but it still hits as America and the world distance.

No. 2:
No. 2: “Cold”

Getty Images

No. 2: “Cold”

As Chris Stapleton begins “Cold,” you’re expecting a performance like “Sometimes I Cry” from Traveller, and dang, does he deliver. This vocal stunner is just a flex. Violin and drum drive an arrangement that is just window dressing for the man to do his job.

No. 1:
No. 1: “Tennessee Whiskey”

Mercury Nashville

No. 1: “Tennessee Whiskey”

It’s the Chris Stapleton song that started the mania. Of course, it’s a cover of a song first recorded by David Allan Coe, but it’s hard to argue it’s anyone but Stapleton’s at this point. “Tennessee Whiskey” is an all-time great country song.
