Luke Combs has always seemed like the kind of country artist you’d want to be best buds with – but after the hilarious events at his Paycor Stadium show in Cincinnati, Ohio, perhaps he’s not someone you’d want to be in a Fantasy Football League with.
After completing the portion of his set when he introduces his band members, Luke Combs addressed the crowd and explained that, instead of heading straight into his high-energy anthem, ‘Lovin’ On You’, they’d be trying something a little different.
He shared, “Who knows what Fantasy Football is in here? I’ve been in a Fantasy Football League with some of my best friends from high school for 12 years now, and last year, we decided whoever lost was gonna have to come on stage and sing with me tonight”.
Luke joked, “Lucky for me, there was a scoring issue in the last game, and my two best friends in the whole world both lost – and they both have to come out and sing in front of you guys tonight. These guys have been nervous about this for a long time”.
Adding to the amusement was the fact that the two friends didn’t get to decide what they’d be performing. The ’Beautiful Crazy’ crooner revealed they’d be singing Marc Cohn’s ‘Walking in Memphis’, with Luke forcing them to wear blue suede shoes in honour of the opening lyrics (“Put on my blue suede shoes / And I boarded the plane”).
It was a fun, light-hearted moment that captured how familial Luke Combs’ sets always are, with the two buddies giving it their all as they offered their take on the iconic Marc Cohn track.
In a valiant attempt to win over the crowd ahead of their performance, one of the guys even brought out a beer-cooler and started handing Miller Lites to fans in the front row.
Any artist in country music would be reluctant to follow Luke Combs, with the ‘Hurricane’ singer-songwriter boasting some of the most-iconic vocals in the genre, so nobody envied his two pals as they sang in front of 60,000 fans that had just been treated to spell-binding renditions of ‘Doin’ This’, ‘Going, Going, Gone’ and more.
Luke was cheering them on the entire time, and although this would’ve been absolutely terrifying in the moment, it’ll no doubt make a fantastic story to tell the grandchildren.
